Air Traffic Services

Whenever more than just a few aircraft are expected to use a particular piece of airspace, some level of air traffic service is provided.  That service may range from just providing information about nearby flights to providing instructions for the separation of aircraft.

Learning to Fly

One can purchase an aircraft and learn to fly it by hiring a qualified flight instructor.  However, most aspiring pilots don’t have this luxury -- instead, they seek the services of a Flight Training Unit for their training.

Schools using aeroplanes or helicopters for training are required to hold a Flight Training Unit Operator Certificate that certifies that the school complies with accepted standards.  Schools providing training for other category of aircraft are not required to hold an Operator Certificate, but they are required to notify Transport Canada of their operation.

You can search for flight training units in a particular geographic area or according the the category of aircraft in which they provide training or by the licence or permit for which they offer training.

Here is some useful advice about how to select a flying school.

The Webster Memorial Trophy Competition is an annual event committed to declaring the "Top Amateur Pilot in Canada".  The national finals for the “Webster” is held late summer each year at locations across Canada.

The actual trophy lives in Ottawa's National Aviation Museum for most of the year.  Next time you're at the museum, hunt up the trophy.

You can find more information about the trophy, and the annual cross-Canada competition to identify Canada's Top Amateur Pilot by checking out the Webster website.

The latest National finalists are listed on the Webster website.

If you've received your Private Pilot Licence for aeroplanes within the past year, why not consider entering the Webster competition by using your licensing flight test?
